I am so grateful that Walker came to California and stayed with us when school was out. It was a treat to have him share those early years and I always hoped that he got some strength from sharing time with Tucker. They both navigated monumental struggles. We loved them so.
I am one of many in the large Crawford family. Walker’s dad is part of that legacy. I was blessed alongside other Crawford cousins to attend the services for Walker in the beautiful woods of Vermont last September. I was deeply moved by the homage to him in all of its artistic forms. The impact of Walker’s suffering was not hidden but shared deeply. The light of the sun streamed through, while the music and offerings provided some space for peace and refection. The quietness was also palatable in between the speakers and contributors. And, I felt an immense and unique respect for Walker and all who loved him.
I have several memorable recollections of Walker. One when he was just 12 he played the trumpet beautifully at his grandfather Willy’s funeral. Music was the most frequent way I connected with him. I don’t remember the year but he and his Dad Bill came to Amherst to play music together on guitars during a music fest in the town. They performed in a park, one group among many invited to participate in this October festivity. Another time he played at a local pizza place in Northampton. I think this may have been when he was attending Hampshire College several miles down the road from me.
Another way Walker connected was through writing. I remember his poems and articles written for “Today’s Catholic”, a publication in Connecticut that his grandmother Anne both wrote for and helped publish. His contributions were always thoughtful and deep. I have such respect for him, the way he conducted himself suffering with an incurable and painful disease for such a long time. He is an inspiration.. Love to all his family. Bernadette
